Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has moved to defend a key member of his squad, on the back of the club’s latest outing.

This comes after Real’s generally stable defensive setup fell to pieces on Sunday evening.

After carrying a 4-1 advantage into the interval in a La Liga meeting with Villarreal, Los Blancos were ultimately forced to settle for a share of the spoils.

As much came owing to nothing short of a collapse early in the 2nd-half, allowing Alexander Sørloth to add to his earlier strike by way of a further three goals.

Singled out for blame on the part of the Real Madrid faithful in the aftermath of the matchup were a number of players, with the name of Éder Militão front and centre.

Another, though, who was also targeted, comes in the form of Andriy Lunin.

Ukrainian international Lunin stepped back in between the posts at La Cerámica, after the returning Thibaut Courtois had taken over La Liga duties over the last couple of weeks.

After the latter managed three clean sheets from three, Lunin’s concession of four goals on Sunday was in turn made to look even worse.

Speaking to the media in the game’s aftermath, however, Carlo Ancelotti was quick to jump to the defence of his shot-stopper.

Adamant that Lunin was not at fault for any of Villarreal’s goals on the night, Real Madrid’s boss assured:

“Andriy Lunin played a good game. The goals were not his fault.”
