Roma face another must-win on Sunday evening when they host Genoa for their final home game of the 2023/24 season.

The Giallorossi’s Champions League hopes are still slim, but anything except a victory will extend their half-decade absence from the competition. The visitors, meanwhile, successfully staved off relegation and have little to play for in the final two rounds of the season.

The game is scheduled to kick-off at 20.45 CET in Rome.

ROMA

Roma enter Sunday’s game in extremely shaky form, with just 1 win in their last 5 games in Serie A. Their Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread following a series of defeats to Bologna and Atalanta, forcing them to win both of their remaining league fixtures.

“We’ve been regularly finishing fifth, sixth, seventh, so we need to change something. Whether it’s been big names or other players, that has remained a constant,” manager Daniele De Rossi explained during his pre-match press conference.

“The league placing has been decent but it’s not what we want for our future. A strong coach gets the club to buy the players he wants – he has to impose himself.”

Adding, “A strong club has to listen to and cater to the coach, within the realms of possibility. If you go and ask for a €100 million player, you’re crazy.”

On the injury front, the only absentee for the hosts is left back Leonardo Spinazzola, who’s expected to also miss next week’s finale. However, attacker Paulo Dybala participated in Friday’s training session and is expected to start in attack alongside Romelu Lukaku and Stephan El Shaarawy.

Genoa

After returning from Serie B this season, it’s “mission accomplished” for Genoa after they mathematically avoided relegation earlier this month.

The visitors faced a tough campaign filled with injuries and shaky results. However, they’ve displayed several impressive moments under Alberto Gilardino—including a dominating 4-1 home victory over Roma earlier this season.

“Tomorrow is a match with a high level of difficulty because we will face a team aspires to Champions League football with a European dimension with quality players and technical depth,” Gilardino said prior to the game.

“This is what we prepared and I told the team: every energy we have at this moment we must bring to the field to finish in the best way because the boys deserve it.”
