32 teams. 64 games. 169 goals. The 2018 World Cup did not disappoint.

France get to claim the glory but players across every nation shone for their respective teams.

But the only team that matters is our Team of the Tournament which you can find below:

GK – Thibaut Courtois – Belgium: Guillermo Ochoa had his moments, as did Kasper Schmeichel, but Courtois takes the cake. Dominates his area so well, exudes calm when claiming the ball and that save against Neymar in injury time… woof!

RB – Kieran Trippier – England: Was a bright spark for England throughout. Boasts a wicked delivery from wide areas and set pieces, never stopped running and scored a brilliant free-kick in the semi final. Boosted his reputation significantly.

CB – Raphaël Varane – France: Colossal. Good in the group stages, reached another level in the knockout rounds. Headed, blocked, intercepted and tackled everything that came his way, with the recovery pace of an Olympic sprinter. The complete defender.

CB – Diego Godín – Uruguay: Unashamedly proud to defend and we love him for it. His only mistake in four games was punished against Portugal, but was otherwise faultless alongside Atléti teammate José Giménez.

LB – Diego Laxalt – Uruguay: Normally plies his trade further forward but was superb for La Celeste at left back. Dogged in his defensive work and showed great stamina to provide an outlet further forward. One of few to keep Mbappé quiet.

DM – N’Golo Kanté – France: It’s happening. N’Golo Kanté for president. Covered every blade of grass, positions himself so intelligently to win the ball and does everything with a smile on his face. Les Bleus unsung hero.

CM – Luka Modrić – Croatia: Golden ball winner and deservedly so. He played more minutes and covered more ground than anyone in the tournament, created the most chances and most take-ons for Croatia and lead by example throughout. What a player.

CM – Paul Pogba – France: Started slowly but once Blaise Matuidi was introduced to the side, we saw the real Paul Pogba. Athletic, dynamic, skilful, audacious, powerful – when he is on song you cannot deny his quality. Stepped up massively in the semi-final and final.

RF – Kylian Mbappé – France: We’re running out of superlatives for this kid. The third youngest player to feature in a World Cup final, the second teenager to score in one and the youngest player to score two goals in a World Cup game since Pelé.

LF – Eden Hazard – Belgium: Can fade in and out of games but was central to everything positive for Belgium. Ends the tournament with five direct goal involvements in six games and put any concerns over his consistency to bed.

CF – Ivan Perišić – Croatia: Kane won the Golden Boot but struggled after the group stages, Lukaku was inconsistent and Ronaldo went home early. You know who wasn’t inconsistent? Perišić. With three goals and one assist – he was a true difference maker.
