Manchester United have announced that José Mourinho has left the club.

A statement released via the club’s official website on Tuesday morning suggested a permanent successor will not be appointed until the summer.

“Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect,” read the statement.

“The club would like to thank José for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”

Mourinho took over at Old Trafford in the summer of 2016 and went on to win the Community Shield, the EFL Cup and the Europa League during his first season at the club.

His second campaign was less successful, however, as United finished trophy-less and 19 points behind rivals Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.

He leaves Old Trafford having won just seven of the opening 17 games of the current Premier League campaign – the club’s worst start to a season since 1990 – with his final match in charge being Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of rivals Liverpool.

A temporary successor is expected to be appointed within the next 48 hours. According to club sources, assistant manager Michael Carrick is not expected to take the role but the interim boss will be a man with strong links to the club.
