After over 40 years as a club secretary, Halford was named life president following his retirement and was dubbed “Mr. Manchester City” by many, including manager Pep Guardiola.

On Wednesday, City captain lead players and staff in a touching tribute along with a moment of silence.

“I’ve been at the club for 11 years,” Kompany said. “I think some of the things we have to do is bring across to people who’ve just joined the club, what the history is.

“Bernard Halford has worked at this club for 47 years, and he’s been a part of the history of this club and he’s been a part of everything that’s happened before we got to this point.

“A big reason why we are here today is because of people like Bernard Halford.

“And I know for him it would be the biggest honour to feel that we mentioned his name today and that we have a minute of silence for him.”
