Harry Maguire faces a long spell on the sidelines after suffering a torn hip muscle.
That’s according to The Telegraph, who report that Maguire sustained the injury during last weekend’s FA Cup draw with Wolves and aggravated it by playing on through the pain.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly wanted to substitute the defender at half-time at Molineux but Maguire was adamant he wanted to continue.
As a result, he was forced to miss Tuesday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat against Manchester City and could now miss several weeks of action.
An exact timescale on his recovery has not yet been determined, nor have United officially confirmed the nature of the injury.
When asked about Maguire’s absence after the City game, Solskjaer said: We don’t know – it’s not going to be a long, long, long-term one. So I don’t think he will ready for the weekend but let’s see.”
However, the Telegraph’s report would suggest the England international will miss the upcoming Premier League clash with Norwich, at the very least.
That leaves Solskjaer with Phil Jones or Marcos Rojo as his only available options to partner Victor Lindelöf in central defence.
Rojo is expected to leave the club this month, however, while Axel Tuanzebe is currently unavailable and Eric Bailly has only just returned to training after undergoing knee surgery.
