On Tuesday, an emergency videoconference call took place between football’s governing bodies in order to decide how to move forward amid the ongoing global health crisis created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Representatives from the European Club Association (ECA), European Leagues (EL) and FIFPRO Europe all took part in the call, and the first big announcement to emerge from the negotiations was that EURO 2020 will officially be postponed until the summer of 2021.

But there is more.

A press release issued later in the day outlined how the relevant parties intend to finish the current domestic season and deal with national team competitions in the coming months.

Here is what they came up with …

National team competitions

  • The EURO 2020 play-off matches scheduled for March will be moved to the international windows of June 2020, subject to a review of the COVID-19 situation
  • EURO 2020 will be postponed until June and July 2021
  • European World Cup qualifiers scheduled for June 2021 will be rescheduled
  • The Uefa Nations League finals, the U21 Euros and Women’s Euros – all scheduled for summer 2021 – will be moved
  • Clubs have agreed to release players to national teams for all rescheduled tournaments

Club competitions

  • A commitment has been made to complete all domestic and European club competitions by June 2020 at the latest, should the situation improve and resuming playing be appropriate and prudent enough
  • This could mean shifting the calendar around and playing some domestic fixtures in mid-week slots, and Champions League and Europa League games at weekends
  • The qualifying rounds for the 2020/21 Champions League and Europa Leagues may have to be adapted if the current season finishes during the summer

Of course, this will all depend on how quickly the spread of the virus can be controlled and contained, but that’s the plan.

Let’s hope it comes to fruition and football returns to our lives as quickly as possible.
