Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag admitted his side were battered in all departments during the 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on Monday night.

The Red Devils were without a significant amount of first-team stars, including captain Bruno Fernandes, but coughed up a dreadful performance as two goals from Michael Olise and strikes from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell inflicted a heavy defeat on the visitors.

United are now down in eighth with only one win from seven Premier League games and Ten Hag admitted their latest showing was well short of the mark.

He told Sky Sports: "It's clear, it's obvious, this is underperforming. We didn't act how we wanted to and it's not good enough. We are very disappointed.

"Our fans were behind us and we should have kept fighting like the fans did.

"There are always reasons, everyone sees our backline - we have huge problems. At the end of the day, we have to deal with it and we should have done better.

"It's a goal that shouldn't happen because we really give clear instructions how we should defend this. They didn't bring it on the pitch. We got hammered.

"There was one issue but also on the left side, there were two players doubling up on one player. That's very poor defending."

Casemiro had a poor game as a makeshift centre-back, being caught out of position and losing possession in dangerous areas - as shown when he was harried by Daniel Munoz before Olise cracked in his second - but Ten Hag insisted the defeat wasn't due to one particular player.

He added: "You can't put this [down to] one player. It's a team performance. The throw-in when you concede the first goal, that shouldn't happen.

"That's the team because we don't follow the rules, we don't adapt to a slightly different situation, to organise, to keep control in that situation. Five players over the ball and they have a throw-in, it's not possible."
