Fortunately, violence at football matches has declined in recent decades but the fighting at Serbia’s Eternal Derby seems destined to last forever.

The 1-1 draw between Red Star Belgrade and Partizan Belgrade on Wednesday was marred by clashes between fans, something that is not uncommon when the two sides meet.

However, reports from the game claim that the fighting was not between the fans of each team, who are known as Delije (Red Star) and Grobari (Partizan).

Rather, the clashes erupted amongst different groups of Partizan supporters in the home end.

17 people were injured as police in riot gear were forced to intervene and lead certain fans away from the trouble. The violence is said to have lasted about ten minutes.

Photographers captured shocking images and people with bloodied, beaten faces.

In another shocking development, Croatian officials are said to have confirmed that Croatian citizens were invited to Belgrade to help in the fighting.

The violence is something that nobody wants to see but the fact that it occurs so regularly at Belgrade derbies suggests that the authorities either do not have a real handle on it or aren’t actually that bothered.
