It's being reported that Charlton Athletic are interested in Coventry City’s Matty Godden as Nathan Jones looks to bolster his forward line in the summer window.

After joining from Peterborough United in 2019, the striker has had a great career with the then League One outfit, playing a vital role in their rise over the past five years.

Godden starred as they won promotion, and he featured regularly for Mark Robins in the past few years as the Sky Blues established themselves in the second tier.

However, he has made 34 league appearances this season, scoring six goals, with most coming from the bench, with Coventry just missing out on the play-offs, but they did enjoy a fantastic FA Cup run that ended in a dramatic semi-final defeat to Man Utd.

That’s down to the excellent form of Ellis Simms and Haji Wright, which means Godden has been mainly used from the bench in the past few months.

Therefore, with the experienced forward entering the final 12 months of his contract this summer, a departure in the window can’t be ruled out.

And, South London Press reporter Rich Cawley has revealed that the Addicks are targeting Godden as Jones looks to strengthen the squad ahead of his first full season in charge of the League One outfit.

Coventry City's Matt Godden is a player that has come up on Charlton’s radar. Still contracted to the Sky Blues for another year, so no guarantees he is available. Would be heavy League One interest if Godden was able to make an exit.”

Ex-England international Carlton Palmer believes Charlton will be a far better side in League One next season, and expects Godden to be another strong attacking addition, should the club opt to sign him this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Palmer said:"Charlton, with their new owners, and the manager, Nathan Jones, have steadied the ship.

"Jones has come in and done really well, with only one defeat in the last six games of the season, and they will be looking to kick on next season with the owners, recruit well, and look to push towards the play-offs or even automatic promotion.

"Jones knows all about getting promotion from this division, but he'll be looking to recruit well to get out of League One. "One of the names on his list is Matty Godden at Coventry City. Godden is a consummate professional, and Mark Robins has often spoke highly of him. "He's got just a year left on his contract, so it might be the right time for him to move on. "I don't think Mark Robins will stand in his way. He knows where the back of the net is in League One, but he's been reduced to very limited game time this season, which is frustrating for him. "They won't stand in his way if he gets the right offer from a club like Charlton. "He is 32, so I don't expect it to take a huge fee, maybe around the £500k-£600k mark to get him out of Coventry. "It would be a shrewd bit of business, as he knows how to find the net in this league, and should be hitting double figures, maybe even as much as 19 or 20 goals for Charlton. "Their recruitment needs to be bang on this coming season. I'm saying it now that I honestly expect Charlton to be there or thereabouts at the top end of League One next season.

"This would be a fantastic start for them. A very experienced player and a good pro."

It would be a major surprise not to see Charlton in a much stronger position next season, and that is largely down to Jones and the improvement in the side since he was appointed.

They look like a much more solid outfit, and Godden would only add further goals to a side which has the League One's top scorer in Alfie May. As a pair working in tandem, they could be deadly in the third tier next season.

Godden can be a goalscorer, but is also a fantastic facilitator of a striker, who will drop deeper and link play if needs be, allowing May to play his best football by stretching in behind and getting on the end of things.
