Sheffield United should be looking to to keep Gustavo Hamer beyond this summer's transfer window.

That's according to Football League World's Sheffield United fan pundit Owain Wyse, who believes the midfielder will be key to his side's hopes of promotion back to the Premier League next season.

Hamer only made the move to Bramall Lane last summer, signing from Coventry City for a reported £15 million.

Since then, the 26-year-old has produced an impressive individual campaign in the Premier League, although he has been unable to prevent his side suffering relegation.

Sheffield United are guaranteed to finish bottom of the top flight table this season, and have already conceded 100 goals with two league games still to be played.

That has already led to some considerable speculation around the future of Hamer. According to a recent report from journalist Alan Nixon, the midfielder will be allowed to leave the Blades in the summer transfer window, if they receive the same £15 million fee that they signed him for.

However, it seems there is some belief among the Sheffield United fanbase that the club should be looking to keep the former Dutch youth international, if at all possible.

Sheffield United given clear message over Gustavo Hamer future

Considering his importance to Chris Wilder's side, this stance over the future of the midfielder could prove something of a talking point among the Bramall Lane faithful.

Not only would it mean losing a potential big asset after just a single season, it could also have implications for how the club approach the rest of the transfer market.

However, Wyse is desperate to see the 26-year-old remain at the club for a promotion push next season, even if he admits the midfielder is good enough to play in the Premier League.

When asked for his thoughts on that reported asking price for Hamer, and if the Blades would be making a mistake by selling the midfielder, the Sheffield United fan told FLW: "I can't help but think it would be a massive mistake to let Hamer go.

"He's absolutely brilliant, he's got everything that a good midfielder needs - hard work, creativity, he's defensively astute, and at the other of the pitch he has goals and assists as well.

"He does have the ability to play in the Premier League, I've no doubt about that. But I really don't think another season in the Championship harms that at all. "If we are serious about getting it right next season, and challenging back at the top of the division, to get back to the Premier League, he will be a massive part of that.

"I think he's got the ability to really push us on and he will be a real star next season in the Championship if we can keep hold of him, I have no doubt about that."

As things stand, there are just over three years remaining on Hamer's contract with Sheffield United.

That secures his future at Bramall Lane until the end of the 2026/27 season, and does put the club in a strong position to respond to any offers they receive for the midfielder this summer.

Sheffield United should look to keep Gustavo Hamer

It would surely be a big boost for Sheffield United if they did manage to retain the services of Hamer beyond the end of the summer transfer window.

The midfielder has clearly impressed for them this season, and also showed just how good he can be in the Championship during his time with Coventry.

As a result, he could be a major asset for the club as they go in search of promotion back to the Premier League.

He is therefore the sort of player they are going to want to keep around, especially given promotion would be worth a lot more to them than that fee they would be receiving for Hamer.

Indeed, his contract situation means that Sheffield United are under no pressure to sell, and so they can demand a decent fee for him.

It would therefore feel underwhelming to only break even on such a useful player, rather than make a profit, and retaining him would also send a strong, positive and encouraging message of intent to the fanbase, given this sentiment shown here.

So with that in mind, it does feel as though Sheffield United should be doing all they can to retain the services of Hamer going into the 2024/25 season and beyond.
