Real Madrid are on the cusp of securing the league title, thanks to a 3-0 victory over Cadiz tonight.

The Spanish giants are awaiting the result of the Barcelona – Girona game. The club could secure the league title if Barça fail to win in the Catalan derby.

Speaking to the press after the game, Carlo Ancelotti addressed the ongoing title race and how Real Madrid are merely a step away.

Ancelotti on the league title

“We have to wait, but we have had a spectacular League. We have made few mistakes and the advantage is deserved,” Ancelotti said. “I don’t care if it’s today or Sunday, we have to win it whenever.”

When asked about not celebrating at Cibeles this year, Ancelotti explained, “It’s different, because today by winning we are not champions because we have to wait. We haven’t won yet. We are going home calmly to think about the next game.”

Ancelotti was also asked about Real Madrid’s ‘season of the buts’, particularly in relation to the defeat to Atletico Madrid in September and the subsequent criticism he received.

Referring to an Italian poem, Ancelotti swiftly answered, “There aren’t many buts, there are some. We have scored only one hundred goals, we have won but we haven’t played very well. So I repeat, tell me about the sea, sailor.”

Following yet another clean sheet, Ancelotti pointed out that Real Madrid’s strong defence played a key role in helping Los Blancos emerge as the best team in the league this season.

“When we start to defend well we improve. The injuries have been important but they have helped us better understand this, that it was a joint problem and we have done it well,” he said.

On players and Bayern game

Ancelotti went on to address the current condition of some of the first-team individuals, including Thibaut Courtois.

“Courtois needs minutes like Militao and in these League games, I am going to put him in. Militao has been much better today. They are much fresher than the others,” he said.

When asked about the substitution of Arda Guler, Ancelotti stated that the decision was made keeping Real Madrid’s interest in mind.

“He had the role he had to have. Today I took him away because I wanted to win the game, I have a contract with Madrid to win. I wanted to put fresh legs in. The young people have progressed and the veterans. They continue to give fantastic performances,” he said.

Ancelotti went on to talk about the role of his son, Davide Ancelotti, in the Real Madrid technical team.

“Davide works like the rest of the staff, they work very well. They bring a lot of enthusiasm because sometimes I can’t have it because I’m a little older,” he said.

Ancelotti also talked about Jude Bellingham, confirming that the Englishman is fit enough to start against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Speaking of the Bayern game, Ancelotti stressed the importance of the match and stated that Real Madrid remain focused on this particular encounter.

“We have the most important game of the season close at hand. Everyone has Wednesday’s game in mind. The less usual ones have responded one hundred per cent. We have to wait, and be patient. We have to recover well and bring out our best version on Wednesday,” he said.

Giving a little mood check of the Real Madrid locker room ahead of Wednesday’s game, Ancelotti added,

“From what I see, the locker room is calm. We have a great opportunity to play in another final and there is no greater motivation than this. An opportunity to finish well a season that has already been spectacular.”
