Lautaro Martinez has now gone two months without scoring for Inter Milan – but this has not stopped the captain from playing an important role.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

One of the most problematic features of Martinez’s game in the couple of seasons prior to this one had been the Argentine’s tendency to score in streaks.

There has not been any denying Martinez’s ability to score prolifically.

But at times, this would only manifest in certain periods. Then, the former Racing Club striker would go weeks at a time without finding the back of the net.

One such goal drought came, for example, in the spring of 2022.

That sequence of matches without a goal from Martinez coincided with a severe downturn in form that saw Inter allow city rivals AC Milan back into the Serie A title race.

This season, something appeared to have changed.

Martinez inherited the captain’s armband at Inter last summer. And this seems to have spurred the 26-year-old onto even greater consistency.

Over the first two thirds of the campaign, there were no goal droughts from Martinez. The Argentine rarely went more than a match or two without finding the back of the net.

Until now, that is.

Lautaro Martinez Goal Drought For Inter Extends To Two Months – But That’s Not A Problem

The last time Martinez scored for Inter was against Atalanta at the end of February.

Since then, there has not been a single goal or assist from the Inter captain.

Martinez is stuck on a total of 26 goals for the season in all competitions, and 23 in Serie A.

In prior seasons, that could have been a problem for Inter.

But this time around, the Nerazzurri have not had any issues.

The reason is simple – Inter have kept scoring. Defenders like Federico Dimarco, Matteo Darmian, and Yann Bisseck have been an outlet for goals.

Martinez’s strike partner Marcus Thuram ended his own goal drought in the Milan derby last month.

And Martinez himself has played an important role in all this.

The Inter captain has kept working tirelessly for the team throughout a period that’s not exactly been sparkling for him personally.

The captain’s armband looks to have given Martinez a greater sense of the need to always work to get the best out of the entire team even when he can’t show his own best form.

That has meant always offering himself as an option in terms of linkup play, and never shying from the dirty work defensively.

There is no sulking or loss in confidence from a player who knows his importance to the team every time he puts on the armband.

The goals will surely return for Martinez, sooner or later. But in the meantime, Inter are getting by just fine.
