The powers that be at La Liga outfit Athletic Club are ready to kick on with negotiations over the contract renewals of two important members of the club’s first-team setup.

That’s according to Marca, who have on Sunday provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes in the Basque Country.

Athletic, as a collective, are fresh off a damaging outing on Saturday night, which saw their top-4 hopes dealt what could prove to be a decisive blow in a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Atlético Madrid.

Attentions in the boardroom at San Mamés, though, have since turned swiftly away from matters on the pitch, and towards the continuity of the club’s key figures.

As per the aforementioned Marca, talks have long been opened with Ernesto Valverde, in efforts to tie the Spanish tactician down to fresh terms on the bench in San Sebastián.

An official announcement regarding as much could even be forthcoming at some point over the next couple of weeks.

And the Athletic brass do not intend to stop there.

Also in line for an imminent renewal proposal, it is claimed, is veteran defender Óscar de Marcos.

Now 35, full-back De Marcos, who has played a prominent role under the watch of boss Valverde this season, will be offered a one-year extension to his expiring terms.
