Barcelona and Atlético Madrid were of course both back in action on the continent a short time ago.

The two giants of Spanish football, however, were ultimately sent packing from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.

As much came by way of respective aggregate defeats at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund.

Whilst the conclusion of their European campaigns will mark an understandable blow for Barca and Atléti alike, though, long-term, it will prove to be more damaging for the former.

This comes with Xavi’s Blaugrana having officially been ruled out of contention for the first edition of the new-look Club World Cup, in 2025.

Real Madrid had long clinched their status as one of La Liga’s two representatives at the tournament, with Barcelona having been aware that anything other than advancing to the Champions League’s semi-finals would see them miss out.

With precisely as much having come to fruition, though, Real and Atlético Madrid have been confirmed as Spanish football’s CWC participants.
