A tweet from an Australian football fan has gone viral, after a gravestone commemorating the country’s World Cup 2022 bid was erected.

Australia was one of five countries, along with South Korea, Japan, United States and eventual winners Qatar, who bid for the tournament.

They spent €30m to try and bring the World Cup to Australasia, but eventually earned just one vote.

The bidding process has been engulfed in controversy, with Qatar being accused of bribing officials, as well as coming under pressure from human rights organisations for workers’ conditions.

The gravestone, in Flemington, Sydney, was seen by @eamonnwarner – who tweeted the image on Thursday.
