A headline member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona is on the verge of committing his long-term future to the club.

The player in question? Pau Cubarsí.

Youngster Cubarsí has of course exploded onto the scene in Catalunya across the year to date.

After first being afforded a chance to impress by boss Xavi amid a personnel crisis at the heart of Barcelona’s backline, La Masia’s latest sensation has since gone on to establish himself as a near-undisputed first-team starter.

Though he has to date managed just 20 appearances in senior football, Cubarsí has already been tipped as a potentially generational defender in the making.

In turn, word surfacing over the course of recent weeks that the powers that be at the Camp Nou had already begun working towards tying their young stopper down to a new deal came as little surprise.

And, if the latest update to have surfaced on Wednesday is anything to go by, it would appear that such endeavours are primed to bear imminent fruit.

As per a report from transfer insider Matteo Moretto of Relevo, an agreement on a contract extension is ‘almost sealed’ between the parties.

All that remains to be defined is whether the deal will be for five or six years.

Common ground, though, is expected to be found in short order, with Cubarsí’s Barcelona renewal therefore considered as ‘imminent’ in Catalunya’s capital.
