Bayern Munich have opened unofficial talks with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag over becoming their next manager.

On Saturday it was reported that Ten Hag is on a new shortlist for the Bayern job after former United boss Ralf Rangnick was the latest to turn the Bavarian side down.

It was then reported yesterday by Sky Germany that the Dutchman wants to stay at United but would jump at the chance of the Bavarian job should things change in Manchester.

This morning, Sky Sports News have added meat to the bones of that story, claiming that the German club has been speaking to Ten Hag’s agent, Kees Vos.

“We know that Bayern Munich have spoken to Erik ten Hag’s agent about potentially, if he were to leave Manchester United, going over to the Allianz Arena,” Mark McAdam said on the “Need to know” programme.

“There’s been no formal talks with Erik ten Hag. His situation is very simple. He just wants to focus on Manchester United at the moment.”

“We know there are a number of other clubs, should Ten Hag leave Manchester United, that would be interested in the Dutchman.”

As the noose tightens around Ten Hag’s neck at Old Trafford, his being lined up by one of the world’s biggest clubs might certainly play on INEOS’ mind and make them consider what they are losing if they were to sack him.

However, that might be exactly what Vos wants and it may be that the leaked story has come from the agent’s end in an effort to control the narrative about his client’s future.

In truth, Bayern are floundering, having already been turned down by Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and, most surprisingly of all, Rangnick. It may be that one of the most coveted positions in world football is seen as something of a poison chalice, although that is unlikely to deter Ten Hag.

Meanwhile, rumours are rampant of United themselves sounding out potential successors to the former Ajax boss. Ironically, Thomas Tuchel, who will leave Bayern at the end of the season, is reportedly on the shortlist.

And in yet another German connection, the Red Devils have reportedly opened talks with former national team boss, Hansi Flick, over potentially replacing Ten Hag.
