Intriguing to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United’s 4-1 victory over Burnley.

The comments from neutrals especially telling…

A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.

The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion though, the politics almost totally absent.

A lot to debate in this game.

The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Burnley fans and the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:

‘Without so many injuries, many of them serious and lengthy, Newcastle would have been challenging for 4th….and Champs League.’

‘If if if if my father was Pele and Mother was Madonna….’

‘Is that based on Newcastle not having so many injuries (or a season long suspension) last season and challenging for 4th and Champions League?

Come on, that’s too obvious for most people.’

‘Bemoan injuries as much as you want but Howe needs a better squad. There are only 3 clubs with true title chances and we know who they are. Newcastle will be in a dog fight for 4th with Spurs Man Utd Chelsea and Villa. Gonna have to splash the cash (somehow)!’

‘Both Newcastle and Brighton have had terrible injury lists this year. More than other clubs, yet Newcastle is still getting the results. Well done to the black and white stripey ones somewhere north of Watford. From a miffed Brighton fan.’

‘Well done the Toon. Also noteworthy that they started the game with 7 British players on the pitch, two being local lads, and fielded another 3 British subs one of which was another local lad.. Show me another Premier league club that does anything like that.’

‘From a Man Utd fan, I will be sorry to see Burnley go down, at times this season they have played really good football. Fair play Newcastle you deserve to be in Europe next season & have played better football than my Man Utd. TBH Utd should be nowhere near a place for Europe. We have had more than our fair share of luck this season despite what ETH says. Hope Burnley bounce back next season.’

‘Injuries may have cost Newcastle United a Champions League place, but this is still a commendable effort this season. Eddie Howe with more European Football next season. Well done.’

‘lol Newcastle are not a CL side – Eddie Howe has no idea.’

‘These 2 and a half seasons of Eddie Howe(because Brucie boy was busy stinking up the joint) have been magical for Newcastle United fans, and I hope we see them in CL two seasons later.’

‘Thank you Geordies. From Nottingham.

Wish you best for the rest of the season. Howay the lads.’

‘Europe league? Not much of a return for Saudi billions is it?’

‘Patience young man, we have not actually spent billions yet.’

‘Some player that Bruno for Newcastle like.’

‘Good win for Newcastle United,it just goes to show awful Man. United were last week..as for Burnley, they have never looked like a Premiership team.’

‘It’s rather sad to see that in all likelihood all 3 teams who gained promotion last year will get relegated but that’s the nature of football at times and shows the gulf between championship and Premier league.’

‘If it’s any consolation to Burnley they are soon coming to WHL to play Tottenham so they are pretty much guaranteed 3 points in their fight to escape relegation.’

‘Can anyone remember a month or two ago when we were seriously worried that West Ham, Wolves and Brighton might finish above us?’

‘The reason they have not finished above you is more to do with them having bad runs and not you putting a great run together.’

‘Last season’s back 5 (Champions League level): Pope, Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn.

Today’s back 5 (Europa League level): Dubravka, Livramento, Krafth, Burn, Hall.

Only one player the same and he’s in a different position. We’ll probably add Tosin and Diomande, but it’s good to know the strength in depth is there already.’

‘We are going down because we are not good enough. We have some very good young players but they aren’t ready for the Premier League and we needed a few more experienced players to bring them on. Newcastle are the worst team to play for us because I can’t remember last time we beat them home or away. Never mind, I like the Championship. Up the Clarets!’
