Inconsistency remains the buzzword around the Blues this season with Mauricio Pochettino unable to address the highs and lows from his Chelsea team to date. The west Londoners have bounced back impressively from their 5-0 humiliation at Arsenal last month, however, fighting back from two goals down to draw with top-four chasing Aston Villa, before beating Spurs in a London derby on Thursday night.

Pochettino said the win over the Spurs was the most satisfying of the campaign as goals from Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson earned a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, a result that keeps them in the hunt for Europe. Despite missing 14 senior players through injury, Chelsea controlled the clash to all but end their rival’s hopes of Champions League qualification.

Three points adrift of Manchester United in sixth place, Pochettino’s team are aiming to overhaul the Red Devils and Newcastle in the run-in. Cole Palmer will hope to end a two-game run without a goal and return to the scoresheet, as the 20-goal forward looks to overtake Erling Haaland (21) in the race for the Premier League’s Golden Boot.

West Ham’s season has run out of steam at the wrong time with a five-game winless run having seen the Irons exit the Europa League and fall off the pace in the Premier League.

David Moyes’ side are ninth, though five points adrift of the top six and guaranteed European football for next season, with just three to play and a tough run-in that includes trips to Chelsea and Manchester City.

Moyes is expected to leave the London Stadium at the end of the campaign as West Ham look to move in a new direction after a solid and stable era. Three consecutive seasons of European football and last season’s Europa Conference League triumph mean Moyes will be well remembered, even if there has been continued unrest with the style of football on show.

This season, West Ham have lacked the solidity usually associated with Moyes’ teams. Only Luton and Sheffield United have a higher expected goals against figure than West Ham (70.36), whose 65 goals conceded are the highest total outside the relegation places. Room for improvement next season.

Last Meeting

West Ham 3-1 Chelsea, 20/08/2023

West Ham condemned Chelsea to an early season defeat at the London Stadium as the Hammers earned a 3-1 win over their big-spending capital neighbours.

Nayef Aguerd opened the scoring with a header on seven minutes before Carney Chukwuemeka equalised with his first goal for Chelsea. The Blues missed the chance to go ahead in the contest when Enzo Fernandez saw his penalty saved by Alphonse Areola, as the Frenchman beat away a tame effort from the World Cup winner.

Michail Antonio’s fierce strike restored the home side’s lead, though West Ham suffered a setback when goalscorer Aguerd was sent off for a second booking.

Despite having a man advantage for almost 30 minutes, Chelsea were unable to get back into the game and conceded a late third when Lucas Paqueta sealed the win for the 10-man Hammers from the penalty spot.
