Crystal Palace vs Man Utd: Referee to wear camera for first time in Premier League history | OneFootball

The Premier League have confirmed that referee Jarred Gillett will wear a camera on his head during Crystal Palace's meeting with Manchester United on Monday evening.

The one-off event, dubbed 'RefCam', is part of a short programme detailing the demands of officiating in the Premier League.

The footage will not be viewable live but will be broadcast later date as part of the upcoming programme.

"I think it will show a lot of things people don't realise," former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher told Sky Sports.

"There was an incident at Burnley on Saturday where Burnley wanted a penalty and I think, if the ref had a headcam on, you'd have seen what he saw, and it's totally different to what you see as a spectator.

"It will open people's eyes a little bit. It's interesting to see what it's for and how educational it will be."

Gillett was first introduced to the English audience when footage emerged of him wearing a microphone during his final match officiating in Australia's A-League in 2019. He was widely praised for his handling of the game, before sealing a switch to become a Football League official that summer.

Since then, Premier League official Rob Jones wore a bodycam during a pre-season meeting between Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion last summer, while fans even got a glimpse into the perspective of players when Aston Villa's Youri Tielemans wore a camera in a friendly against Newcastle United.

Back in February, the Bundesliga produced a programme which included footage and audio from referee Daniel Schlager, and the Premier League are now set to follow suit.
