Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has confirmed that Daniel James will miss Saturday’s game with Southampton, and Patrick Bamford remains a doubt.

Leeds United’s automatic promotion chances are slim

The Whites have enjoyed an outstanding season in terms of their points return, having picked up 90 from 45 games.

Normally, that would guarantee a top two finish, but the form of Leicester City and Ipswich Town means Leeds head into the final day looking set for the play-offs.

The Foxes have already claimed the title, and Kieran McKenna’s Tractor Boys know that a point at home to a Huddersfield Town side that are effectively relegated, will see them take the second automatic spot.

For Leeds, they have to win to have any chance of finishing above Ipswich, so they will approach the game looking for three points, and then hope the Terriers can do them a massive favour.

The 4-0 defeat to QPR last time out was a result, and a performance, that came out of the blue, as Farke’s men were surprisingly below par for such a key game.

A few injury issues didn’t help, with James and Bamford among the absentees, along with right-back Connor Roberts.

And, speaking to reporter Phil Hay, Farke gave an update on the trio, and there’s a possibility that they will all be missing when the Saints visit Elland Road this weekend.

James isn't available. Roberts also a major doubt, although has done some training and could make the squad. Bamford yet to resume full training. Late decision on him.”

Daniel James and Patrick Bamford are key to Leeds

The news about James and Bamford is a concern for the Whites, as the duo are very important players, even if they have divided opinions over the years.

This has been a real breakthrough year for James in terms of productivity, as the ex-Man Utd man has hit double figures for the first time in his career, scoring 13 goals and registering seven assists in 40 appearances.

As well as the impressive output, James is a constant threat with his pace, so he’s a great option to have when Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto tire in games.

Meanwhile, Bamford hasn’t been as prolific, but the performance against the R’s highlights how badly he is missed, as the harsh reality is that Joel Piroe just doesn’t offer the same qualities as a number nine.

Some fans will argue that Mateo Joseph should be given an opportunity, and whilst he does look quality, it’s a big ask to throw a youngster in at such a critical period of the campaign.

So, Farke is sure to give Bamford until the very last minute to show he is available, but he may have to manage his minutes carefully if he does play, particularly if news comes through that Ipswich are winning.

If Leeds do finish in the play-offs, they are scheduled to play the first-leg of their semi-final on Sunday, May 12, with a 12:30 kick-off.
