In a recent episode of “Media Matters” on Anfield Index, Dave Davis and David Lynch delved into the significance of set-piece coaching in football. Their conversation highlighted Liverpool’s current approach and the potential benefits of incorporating a specialized set-piece coach into their staff.
Dave Davis brought up the effectiveness of set-piece strategies in modern football, suggesting that Liverpool could benefit significantly from such specialization. The discussion referenced how teams like Arsenal have capitalized on set-piece scenarios, attributing part of their success to dedicated coaching. “Arsenal have got a set piece coach, City have got one, Villa have got but Liverpool don’t,” Davis remarked, indicating a potential area for improvement for Liverpool.
Both Lynch and Davis agreed on the necessity for Liverpool to adapt tactically by possibly hiring a set-piece coach. This adaptation could enhance their competitiveness, particularly in tightly contested matches where set-pieces can often be the deciding factor. Lynch highlighted how other clubs have integrated this role effectively, suggesting that Liverpool might be missing out on optimizing these critical game moments.
The conversation also touched on the broader tactical implications of not having a set-piece specialist. Lynch pointed out that while Liverpool has excelled in various aspects of the game, their set-piece execution could be what separates them from being good to great. “It’s almost like a separate sport completely, take those out of the game and just analyse how the actual passages of play went and the actual game itself you know it could have been in Spurs favour but but because Arsenal are so excellent at this one thing they win a lot of games off the back of it or even the ones they’ve won that 5-0 but but a lot of the time their game breaking goal the one that makes it one nil or two nil is a set piece,” Lynch argued, underscoring the high stakes involved.
This insightful discussion between Dave Davis and David Lynch on Anfield Index sheds light on the critical yet often overlooked role of set-piece coaching in football. As Liverpool contemplates its future strategies, incorporating a set-piece coach could be a pivotal decision that influences their success in upcoming seasons.
