Karim Benzema’s slim chance of being called for the World Cup appear to have been officially buried by Didier Deschamps.

The French national team manager gave an interview to L’Équipe where he hinted at the possibility of considering the Real Madrid striker – but that option seemed to fade as he continued his answer.

“Will Benzema be in Russia? I don’t know. I have not selected (the squad) yet. I will choose. There’s many that will be on TV,” Deschamps told the French newspaper.

“However, there will be even more that will be left watching on their TV’s instead of with me in Russia, that’s clear.”

Despite being France’s top scorer in Brazil 2014, Deschamps hasn’t called up the Real Madrid man since October of 2015.

Benzema himself has stated before that he has no chance of coming back to the national team as long as the 1998 World Cup winner is at the helm.

“I have no problem with the manager, but I know that while he is there, he won’t call me,” Benzema told Canal Plus last November.
