Never was that more apparent than on the final day this weekend and so because there was so much going on, we're breaking with tradition slightly here and breaking down the best bits from both the top and bottom of the Championship.

Championship top half

Moment of the weekend

Ipswich are back in the Premier League.

After a 22-year absence the Tractor Boys are returning to the big time following a sensational campaign under the tutelage of coach Kieran McKenna.

Their promotion was sealed this weekend with a win over Huddersfield as Wes Burns and Omari Hutchinson sealed the three points and got the party started in East Anglia.

It means that Leeds finish third and take their place in the play-offs where they will face Norwich.

Southampton and West Brom face each other in the second semi-final.

Notable mentions: Southampton impress in win at Leeds; Middlesbrough end on a high; West Brom breeze past Preston

Player of the weekend

Southampton are now the form side going into the play-offs this weekend.

Russell Martin's side hit a snag around February and March but have regrouped and showed their mettle on Saturday with a brilliant win at Leeds.

Adam Armstrong was the pick of the bunch for Saints as his early goal put the Hampshire side ahead before holding out for a 2-1 win.

Southampton now go to West Brom on Sunday before hosting the Baggies on May 17.

Notable mentions: Omari Hutchinson (Ipswich); Kyle Bartley (West Brom); Alex Bangura (Middlesbrough)

Championship bottom half

Moment of the weekend

Four teams were fighting to avoid the dreaded drop on the last day with Birmingham occupying the final relegation spot going into the games on Saturday.

Blackburn, Plymouth and Sheffield Wednesday were all mathematically still not safe with Rovers going to champions Leicester, the Pilgrims taking on promotion-chasing Hull and the Hillsborough side travelling to Sunderland.

In the end, all four teams won their respective games meaning that Birmingham stayed in 22nd and went down by a point.

Let's not forget that Birmingham and their American ownership sacked coach John Eustace when they were in sixth-place back in October.

And who is now the Blackburn boss that guided the Ewood Park side to safety with a victory at Leicester? John Eustace. It's a funny old game.

Notable mentions: Bottom side Rotherham score five; Plymouth stun Hull; Wednesday do the impossible and stay up

Player of the weekend

Sammie Szmodics has been astonishing all season for Blackburn and was naturally the hero this weekend against Leicester.

In a side struggling for goals all term, the Ireland international bagged a jaw-dropping 33 in all competitions for Rovers.

His last two came at the King Power Stadium with a 94th minute strike completing the 2-0 win.

Notable mentions: Tom Eaves (Rotherham); Jordan Hugill (Rotherham); Luke Cundle (Stoke)

League One

Moment of the weekend

The League One play-offs took place this weekend with Bolton taking on Barnsley and Oxford hosting Peterborough.

The Yellows had actually beaten Posh 5-0 just two weeks earlier but Saturday's match was a much nervier affair.

Darren Ferguson's visitors were actually the better side over the 90 minutes but it was Oxford who ground out a win as defensive stalwart Elliott Moore headed in the only goal on 53 minutes.

The return game is on Wednesday and it's going to be a nervy one.

Player of the weekend

In the other play-off semi-final, Bolton really showed their class as they beat the Tykes 3-1 at Oakwell.

Dion Charles was the stand out man for Wanderers as the 28-year-old scored his 15th and 16th goals of the League One season.

His second, in the 95th minute, has surely taken this game out of reach for Barnsley?
