Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is on a shortlist of three or four candidates to replace Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich.

This is according to German reporter Christian Falk, who posted an update on X (formerly Twitter) this morning.

Falk writes:

“Max Eberl, Head of Sport, is actually checking three, four candidates for the new Manager of FC Bayern: Julen Lopetegui (first via SKY) Roger Schmidt (@SLBenfica) Erik ten Hag (@ManUtd) Roberto de Zerbi said that he want to stay at @OfficialBHAFC

It will be a fantastic boost for the beleaguered United boss to know that despite the nightmare season at Old Trafford, his stock is still high enough to be linked with one of the world’s biggest clubs.

It was also recently revealed that Ajax would like him to return, something he admitted would interest him should he leave United.

Bayern’s current head coach, Thomas Tuchel, is stepping down at the end of the season after a disappointing campaign that ended an 11-season record Bundesliga winning streak for the Bavarians.

However, die Roten could still end the season on a high as they are a step away from the Champions League final, drawing 2-2 at home to Real Madrid in the first leg of the semi.

Bayern’s shortlist would appear to have been drawn up by Eberl after reportedly having been rejected by four candidates, Xabi Alonso of Bayer Leverkusen, Julian Nagelsmann (who Tuchel replaced), former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane and another former United manager, Ralf Rangnick, now manager of Austria.

Falk’s post suggests that De Zerbi, too, may have rejected the advances of Germany’s most famous side.

Amidst mounting speculation that United might sack Ten Hag at the end of the season, many fans have expressed concern that delaying the decision is giving Bayern first crack at the managers available at the top level.

That they themselves are now turning their attention to the Dutchman is a turn up for the books that might even see a direct exchange of managers, with Tuchel coming the other way.
