Robert Vilahamn was pleased with the character of his side’s performance to earn a 2-2 draw at Everton on Saturday in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Having come back from a one-goal deficit in our last two WSL games against Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion, this time we had to fight back from 2-0 down at Walton Hall Park after Sara Holmgaard and Justine Vanhaevermaet handed the hosts the lead inside the opening 15 minutes.

Drew Spence, who returned to the starting XI after missing last weekend’s game, cut the deficit on the stroke of half time, firing the ball home into an empty net, and, then three minutes after the break, Bethany England made it four goals in four WSL game, sweeping home Spence’s pass.

Despite creating a host of chances, including Martha Thomas and Kit Graham being denied superbly by Courtney Brosnan, we couldn’t find a winner in Merseyside.

Although Robert admitted that wasn’t the result we wanted, he praised the player’s persistence to stick with the style of football and their character to come back to secure a point.

“I’m always trying to analyse a game without the result and it was a very good game of football,” speaking to SPURSPLAY after the game. “We had the possession, we dictated the game, pressed really high and scored two nice goals, but we had a lot of chances and gave them two goals.

“So, 2-2 is not the result we wanted but coming back from 2-0 down is good, though. We need to learn to not give away goals at the beginning and we need to learn to produce more goals, but it’s a good step because we played good football and the players were brave on the pitch.

Asked about the mentality to comeback once again, he added: “That’s the strength we have and the character we have in the group to keep going and keep playing our style of football and that’s why I think we will be really good in the long-term.

“But, on the other hand, I know we can play even better if we can get the first and second goal. We need to be sharper, I mean, we basically gave them two goals so we need to be better there, however, this is the first year of new relations, new players coming in so it’s kind of normal when you are in this phase of the journey. But, once again, I think, we had a good game, played very good football and created some nice attacks.”
