In a recent report, journalist Steve Kay stated that Everton are set to rival Crystal Palace for Luton Town defender Teden Mengi. It has been revealed that the Toffees are eager to seal a move for the English centre-back this summer.

Mengi is having a solid campaign at Luton as he put in a run of impressive displays at the heart of their defence. The 22-year-old has scored one goal in 35 matches for the Premier League outfit this season in various competitions.

The Manchester-born talent has been a solid presence inside his half based on his average of 1.8 tackles, 2.0 interceptions and 4.7 clearances per game in the Premier League. He has even distributed possession relatively well after completing 78.6% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).

The former Manchester United youngster is enjoying his football at Luton right now. However, the English club’s potential relegation from the Premier League could open the door for the Toffees to sign him later this year.

Is Mengi A Good Fit For Everton?

Mengi is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when needed and can use his robust 1.86m frame to win a few 50-50 aerial duels for his side.

The English sensation is a good passer of the ball when he is playing with confidence on the field. He has earned some valuable experience in the Premier League this season and won’t take much time to settle into life at Everton.

Mengi is good enough to add more bite and steel to the Merseyside club‘s backline. He might even help the Toffees steer clear of relegation danger in the Premier League next season.

Mengi is more than capable of serving as a good, rotational piece in Everton‘s match-day squad over the next few years. At 22, he is a player on the rise and would be a good fit for the Toffees’ needs in the long run. However, Everton would have to be patient with his progress before they can unlock the best out of the youngster at Goodison Park.
