The tag of 'Neverkusen' has been extinguished rather dramatically this season.

Not only have Bayer Leverkusen silenced the mockery of rival supporters by finally getting over the line in first place in the Bundesliga and adding to a sparse trophy cabinet, they have conquered Germany with beautiful football, dramatic late goals and a relentless spirit.

Xabi Alonso has helped transform a club used to falling short into an unapologetic winning machine, striking down record after record en route to glory. They have vanquished opponents with little fuss for much of the campaign and there could still be more to come from Europe's most in-form side.

Here are the many, many records that Bayer Leverkusen have smashed this season, as well as some of the feats they can still achieve before it's over.

Leverkusen supporters would have snapped your hand off for any piece of silverware this season, but they have already claimed the most valuable trophy in their long history. By winning the Bundesliga title, something they did back in mid-April with a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen, they claimed their first ever German championship with a club record number of points.

Euphoria and relief filled the BayArena in equal measure after that demolition of Bremen, with Leverkusen having finished runners-up in the German top flight on five occasions over the past three decades. In fact, the Bundesliga title was the first trophy the club had claimed since a DFB Pokal triumph in 1992/93, bringing a 31-year wait for silverware to an end.

What is even more incredible about Leverkusen's triumph this season is that they have done it without being beaten. Not just in the Bundesliga but in all competitions. Their run without a loss currently stands at 48 competitive matches overall - matching Benfica's invincible European record from 59 years ago and setting a new record among Europe's top five leagues.

They are also the side with the longest unbeaten record among German teams in all competitions, surpassing a 34-game run perviously held by Bayern Munich, and they also became the first Bundesliga side ever to score two or more goals in their opening 12 matches.

Alonso's free-scoring Leverkusen have also netted more goals in the Bundesliga this season than any other in their history, while accumulating more league wins than their previous record of 21.

While Leverkusen's 2023/24 campaign has already been historic, they still have some gargantuan games to play. Alonso's men have two more league matches and if they avoid defeat to Bochum and Augsburg, they will become the first ever team to go unbeaten across an entire Bundesliga campaign. But victories in both games would still see them fall just one point short of the all-time Bundesliga points record for a single season, which stands at the 91 set by Bayern in 2012/13.

Leverkusen are also in the DFB Pokal final this season, meaning they could win the trophy for only the second time, as well as one foot in the Europa League final. If they complete that treble, they would be the first side to win the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and Europa League in a single campaign.

If they were to win the Europa League, it would be a first European trophy since the 1987/88 UEFA Cup, and their first European final since finishing runners-up in the Champions League in 2001/02.

As previously mentioned, Leverkusen matched Benfica's record for most unbeaten games across all competitions in Europe, a record they will surpass if they avoid defeat to Roma in their Europa League semi-final second leg on Thursday night.
