Benjamin Pavard feels that even with having clinched the Serie A title, Inter Milan would have wanted to beat Sassuolo.

The Frenchman spoke to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset after the Nerazzurri’s surprise loss to Sassuolo, via FCInterNews.

Inter suffered their second defeat of the season yesterday evening in Emilia-Romagna.

The Nerazzurri’s only other loss had also come against Sassuolo.

That fact certainly seems to confirm the Neroverdi’s status as a “bogey team” for Inter.

The result was a huge one from the perspective of Sassuolo. The Emilians are very much fighting for Serie A survival, and even a win over the champions was not enough to get them out of the relegation zone.

However, it was certainly a big boost.

For Inter, on the other hand, this defeat was hardly the end of the world.

The Nerazzurri already clinched the Serie A title a couple of weeks ago. They did so in a derby against city rivals AC Milan.

In that sense, yesterday evening was something of a comedown after the euphoria of the title celebrations.

But it was still a defeat that stings for Inter. Especially as it meant that they were unable to avenge their loss to Sassuolo in the fall.

Benjamin Pavard: Inter “Wanted To Win” Vs Sassuolo Despite Serie A Title Being Clinched

Pavard said after the match that “We’re very disappointed with the result.”

“Because it’s true that we’ve already become champions. But we’re competitive, and we wanted to win.”

“Particularly for our fans who travelled all this way to see us,” the Frenchman added.

“Congratulations to Sassuolo, who’ve beaten us twice,” Pavard said.

“They’re a good team.”

“But we still should have done better,” the 28-year-old former Bayern Munich defender made clear.

“Now we have to think about what comes next,” he added. “There are three matches to go, and we have to try and win them.”

Pavard lamented that “We’re professional athletes, and we’re very sorry to lose.”

“These are things that can happen in football though.”

“Now we have to rest up and focus on the next three matches,” Pavard said.

“Even though we’re already champions, we want to finish the season well. In the dressing room we’re all very disappointed with this loss.”

The defender added that “This week we’ll review the footage of the match to understand where and what we did wrong here.”
