Former Spain and Real Madrid manager agrees deal to take over from David Moyes at West Ham | OneFootball

Former Spain, Real Madrid and Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui looked to be on the verge of signing for AC Milan as their replacement for Stefano Pioli. However he has now agreed to take over at West Ham United this summer.

Lopetegui’s appointment looked almost a certainty at San Siro following months of links, but a major fan mobilisation, including the Milan ultras, against Lopetegui’s signing resulted in that process being halted, reportedly leaving the Basque manager in disbelief.

Now Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Lopetegui has agreed a deal to replace David Moyes at West Ham, bringing to an end a five-year stint for the Scotsman, who secured the Conference League for the Hammers. He had been linked to the Bayern Munich job too, but West Ham appear to have convinced him to move to London.

The 57-year-old has been out of work since the start of the season, when he left Wolves just before the campaign began. The previous year, Lopetegui had resuscitated Wolves, taking them to safety having taken over with them bottom of the table, winning 10 of their 27 games. Prior to that, brief but spells at Spain and Real Madrid saw him oversaw Sevilla’s best run of Liga finishes since the 1960s, qualifying them for the top four for three years in a row, as well as winning the Europa League for Los Nervionenses.
