Currently, it remains to be seen where Mason Greenwood’s future lies beyond this season.

Upon the culmination of the 2023/2024 campaign, he will officially be a Manchester United player again, although it’s unlikely that he’ll be donning the red shirt after the summer window has passed.

The Red Devils opted against reintegrating the 22-year-old back into the squad last summer after leaks had suggested that there were plans in place for him to resume his role in the team. However, it was the strong resistance from fans that led to senior figures performing a U-turn on their initial decision and announcing that the player would continue his career away from Old Trafford.

At the time, Greenwood hadn’t played a minute of competitive football since he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in January 2022 – charges that were subsequently dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew their participation from the case and new material came to light.

In his 32 appearances for the Spanish outfit, the forward has notched 10 goals and six assists in all competitions. Manager Jose Bordalas eased Greenwood into first-team action while he took the time to regain match fitness, and after he did, the United loanee became an integral starter.

Getafe chief divulges Barcelona’s interest in Greenwood

It’s such form that has led to him being linked with numerous clubs, mainly Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, the latter of which have reportedly made contact with Getafe over the prospect of acquiring Greenwood, which is somewhat bizarre given that any transfer call is 100 per cent down to United.

Angel Torres, Getafe’s president, revealed that Blaugrana chiefs had made an approach to gain clarity over the Carrington graduate’s situation.

“Atletico has not asked me about Greenwood,” he told Radio Marca. “I spoke with [Atletico CEO] Miguel Angel [Gil Marin] about other things.

“The only one who has asked me has been [Barca president] Joan Laporta when he was here. I spoke with him and with [sporting director] Deco, and they asked me what he was like to get a sense of the player. But first, they have to sell, that is the problem of Spanish football.”

Torres added: “If it depended on the boy, his parents and the club [Getafe], I think he would continue another year here.

“But Manchester United’s idea is to sell if there is a good offer, so we will have to wait. But I hope he is going to stay.”
