Leon Goretzka has continued to play himself into European Championship form in recent weeks. National coach Julian Nagelsmann recently left open whether his dream of playing at the tournament in his own country could come true. The Bayern star has now reiterated his wish.

In an interview with kicker, Leon Goretzka rated his current form as „more stable than ever before in my career“. However, despite his good performances in recent weeks, a nomination for the home European Championship is still in doubt.

National coach Julian Nagelsmann recently told MagentaTV that he had always said that the door was not closed, „but in general, the art of being a coach is to find a team for the tournament where every player is 100 per cent suited to their role.“

He was referring to Goretzka, among others, who he does not think would accept a role as a supplementary player.

Goretzka is „top motive

However, the 29-year-old would be willing to do just that. He is „highly motivated, wants to continue to impress with top performances like he did recently and will accept any role Julian has in mind for me. We can achieve a lot together, I’m sure of that.“

Nagelsmann had selected his former Bayern protégé alongside a number of other national team stars after they suffered heavy defeats against Turkey (2:3) and in Austria (2:0) during the international break in October. The national coach’s squad plan is to establish a clear defence with regulars and highly motivated challengers for every position.

There therefore currently seems to be no room for Goretzka in the fiercely contested double six. It would appear that returnee Toni Kroos will be the starter, while the other place will probably go to newly crowned German champions Robert Andrich, who started in the test matches against France and the Netherlands.
