Sheffield United have just two games left to play in the Premier League before they return to the Championship.

This 2023/24 campaign has been an utter disappointment for the Blades and their chances of staying in the top flight have never got going.

So, with the Blades set to return to the second tier, changes will be expected at the club during the summer period, as the club will want to bounce back at the first time of asking and manager Chris Wilder, if still in charge, will want to be able to make personnel changes.

Several players will have question marks over their futures at the club, with midfielder Gus Hamer likely to be one of those, given he has done reasonably well in the Premier League this season.

So, as the summer transfer window fast approaches, here at Football League World, we have looked at the latest news surrounding Hamer…

Sheffield United take £15m stance

As mentioned, Sheffield United are on their way back to the Championship, and it seems there could be some changes in their playing squad.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, the Blades are willing to listen to offers for the midfielder worth up to £15 million.

The Yorkshire side only signed Hamer last summer from Coventry City for the same fee and while he has done well in the top flight, the club is looking to recoup that money.

This was the Brazilian’s first time playing in the top flight, with him so far scoring four times and recording six assists.

The midfielder has been an important part of Sheffield United’s set-up and has made the most contributions in the entire squad, but it seems that hasn’t stopped the club from looking to move him on after only 12 months at the club.

It seems the Blades are looking to raise funds and see selling Hamer for £15 million is a good way of doing that.

Mark Robins makes Gustavo Hamer point while discussing Callum O’Hare

Hamer’s former club Coventry City look set to lose another key player this summer, as midfielder Callum O’Hare looks likely to depart.

O’Hare’s contract at the club expires this summer, and it seems he’s destined for a fresh move, which would mean it is three big departures from the CBS Arena in 12 months when you consider Hamer and Viktor Gyokeres.

While discussing O’Hare’s situation, Mark Robins was asked about the player struggling to receive the same love and support he has got at Coventry from another club, and Robins refers to Hamer being back to watch his old club more times than he has been at Sheffield United this season.

Robins told Coventry Live: "I think the Coventry supporters have been brilliant with every player. There are certain players that they take to their hearts, and they remain there.

"Certainly that’s the case with Callum, who has been immense over the last four or five years, and it’s been the personality that he is that’s done that. When they meet him, they see that effervescent character, and he’s the same as he is on the pitch. He’s just a lovable guy who has just been incredible for the football club.

"But he will miss the supporters, and it’s similar with every player who goes from here. I mean, I think Gus (Hamer) has been back here more than he’s been at Sheffield United, to be honest, watching the games and what have you. So Callum will miss it, one hundred percent, and that’s the same for everyone, well, 99.9 percent. I was just thinking about Viktor (Gyokeres) there.

"I don’t think he will because he is just laser focused and will be getting on with what he’s doing. But we have special supporters who definitely carry you along, and that’s what makes this club as special as it is."

Hamer’s contract situation at Sheffield United

As mentioned before, Hamer only joined Sheffield United last summer, so this will be his first full season at the club.

So, it may surprise Blades fans to see the club looking to sell a player that has proven to be exceptional in the Championship before.

Furthermore, given the midfielder only arrived last summer, it is no surprise to hear that Hamer has still got plenty of years left on his contract.

When the 26-year-old joined in August, the Yorkshire outfit made sure they secured the player’s future at the club, as he signed a four-year deal - he will not be out of contract until the summer of 2027.
