Liverpool look set to announce the arrival of Arne Slot as a replacement for Jurgen Klopp in the near future.

It has been reported that conversations between Liverpool higher-ups and Feyenoord took place over the weekend, with a broad outline now in place for the terms under which Slot will become Liverpool’s new head coach.

The 45-year-old Dutchman has been at the Rotterdam club for three years, winning the Eredivisie title last season and earning a KNVB Beker (Dutch cup) last week.

He also led Feyenoord to the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League final, where they were beaten by Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

Slot, a former AZ coach, is also a two-time Dutch coach of the year.

Xabi Alonso was regarded as the early frontrunner to succeed Klopp but the Spaniard opted to remain at Bayer Leverkusen.

Other candidates like Julian Nagelsmann and Ruben Amorim won’t come either, with Nagelsmann agreeing a new contract to stay on as manager of Germany beyond Euro 2024 and a contrite Amorim now likely to remain with Sporting CP after an ill-advised trip to London in order to speak to West Ham.

And now one Liverpool legend, the 183-goal striker Robbie Fowler, reveals that Slot’s entire career pretty much passed him by, and admits that he had to GOOGLE who the Dutchman was when he saw that he was linked with the Reds role.

Fowler, a former Liverpool captain and winner of multiple major honours including the FA Cup and UEFA Cup, says Slot didn’t strike him as a Liverpool manager in waiting and hopes that he can nonetheless steady the ship after a tumultuous few weeks at Anfield.

“I’ll be honest, I hadn’t a clue Slot was even in the conversation among the power brokers who run Liverpool,” the 49-year-old wrote in his Daily Mirror column.

“He wasn’t someone who jumped out at me as a candidate. In fact, I knew nothing about Slot at all or the way he plays and, ­probably like many people, I dived into Google to check him out.

“He’s done OK at Feyenoord the last couple of seasons, but only time will tell if he can take Liverpool to greater heights than Klopp managed.

“That will be a tall order, but the more pressing problem for Liverpool is getting some stability back into players feeling the effects of Jurgen’s imminent departure.”
