Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has announced that teenage winger Ben Doak is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a tear in his knee.

The 18-year-old had to be withdrawn from Liverpool U21s’ win over Chelsea on Sunday and it now looks like he will face a lengthy time out of the team.

The Dutchman told the press ahead of Liverpool’s EFL Cup quarter-final clash with West Ham on Wednesday: “That’s not a good one (Doak).

“He teared his lateral meniscus, which needs surgery. That will take longer time.

“He is young, he is a fit guy, he is a positive guy so for sure whe will come back stronger.”

Lijnders did have more positive news around the current status of Ryan Gravenberch with fears of an injury suffered against Manchester United at the weekend turning out to be just fatigue.

There were also updates given around the fitness of Diogo Jota and Alexis Mac Allister.

“Diogo is doing ball work on the pitch so that is getting closer and closer.

“Alexis is progressing well, he doesn’t have pain anymore which is a good thing.

“It was worse than we first thought. Let’s see if we can progress him.”
