David Moyes has said it was ā€œthe right decisionā€ to leave West Ham, and believes the club is in a better place in comparison to when he rejoined the club in December 2019.

It was confirmed last week that the 61-year-old would depart at the end of the season when his contract expires, with the expectation that Julen Lopetegui will replace him in the hotseat.

Speaking ahead of his final game at the London Stadium against Luton Town on Saturday, Moyes said:Ā ā€œTo finish in the top ten would be excellent for us. Iā€™m not the type of person (to get emotional) but Iā€™m looking forward to the game.ā€

On his exit, he added: ā€œItā€™s the right decision for both parties. Weā€™ll go our separate ways having had a good four and a half years. Iā€™d like to stay in management but first it would be good to have a break.ā€

ā€œIā€™d like to be remembered for someone who did the job well. We became a European team and now West Ham are expected to remain a European team. Thereā€™s a lot of stability at the club now.ā€

The former Manchester United and Everton manager led West Ham to victory in last seasonā€™s Europa Conference League, the clubā€™s first trophy since their FA Cup triumph in 1980.

He also helped the Irons to a quarter-final (this season) and semi-final of the Europa League, as well as two top seven league finishes, having previously secured their top-flight safety in his first stint during the 2017-18 season.

West Ham currently sit ninth in the Premier League table with Manchester City away coming on the final day of the season on May 19 after their clash with the Hatters.
