There’s a new name among the favourites to be the next Liverpool manager. It comes after new reports that Ruben Amorim isn’t exactly a certainty.

Arne Slot has become one of the favourites for the Liverpool job among bookies. The Dutchman is currently at Feyenoord, where he won the Eredivisie in 2023.

Slot has enjoyed a great time with the Dutch side after taking over in 2021. Feyenoord were a fifth-placed team when he got the job but he quickly got them to third - and to the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League final.

That was just his first season - Slot won the title in his second. Notably, he did it despite Feyenoord losing key players ahead of the campaign. Marcos Sensei left for Bournemouth, Tyrell Malacia to Manchester United and Luis Sinisterra to Leeds United, for example.

Feyenoord again lost key players ahead of this season. Captain Orkun Kokcu went to Benfica, for instance, while Danilo went to Rangers after just one season - but Slot still has them in 2nd behind PSV Eindhoven.

Perhaps it isn't a great shock to see his name on the list, then. Especially with talk that Ruben Amorim isn't the surefire hire that many believe him to be.

Liverpool and Ruben Amorim

David Ornstein made it very clear this week that Ruben Amorim isn't the runaway favourite for the Liverpool job. While he may top their shortlist, the Reds are conducting a broad search here.

"Amorim is in the mix, as has been well documented, but we’re told he is not a shoo-in or a nailed-on first choice at this stage," Ornstein told a Q&A for the Athletic. "Liverpool are said to be conducting a genuinely thorough and broad process that has also highlighted alternative candidates."

And so managers like Arne Slot will naturally be on the list, too. Perhaps he has some ways to go before overhauling Amorim in the race - but that doesn't mean he couldn't do it.

At the very least, Slot is a name fans should keep an eye on.
