The much-anticipated TV documentary capturing Jurgen Klopp's final season as Liverpool manager now hangs in the balance, with negotiations over streaming rights still not reaching a conclusion.

The in-house production, spearheaded by Lorton Entertainment, commenced filming in December and was officially announced in January.

However, despite the buzz surrounding the project, The Athletic reports that no streaming service has secured exclusive rights, prolonging discussions between the club and various platforms.

While Disney+ remains the frontrunner for acquiring the rights, as yet, no formal agreement has been reached.

From possible Quadruple to anticlimax

Scheduled for an August 2024 premiere to coincide with the start of the new Premier League season, the documentary promised a unique perspective, focusing on the club's cultural significance rather than an unrestricted behind-the-scenes portrayal akin to Amazon's All or Nothing series.

However, despite expectations of a lucrative deal fetching the club an 'eight-figure sum' upon its eventual signing, the lack of concrete interest in the show reflects a more sombre reality than initially envisioned.

The idea was first conceived during Liverpool's pursuit of a historic Quadruple, but recent setbacks, including exits from the FA Cup and Europa League, alongside a disappointing end to the Premier League title race, have cast a shadow over Klopp's farewell.

That said, footage did capture the Carabao Cup success over Chelsea at Wembley back in February.

Football documentaries, a growing trend

Until now, Klopp had been strongly against cameras being allowed in his dressing room.

However, the Reds eventually joined the ranks of clubs trying to capitalise on the streaming trend, following in the footsteps of Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City, who recently showcased their Treble-winning season on Netflix.

Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan reportedly approached Klopp about the proposal, which originated from the club's digital and marketing department, and eventually the German changed his mind.

Speaking about the documentary, Klopp told the club's official website: "With this being my final season, I thought we should provide a rare opportunity for viewers to have more of an inside look at what makes this club so special: its people, from our fans to our players and those who work so hard behind the scenes, constantly in pursuit of success for Liverpool Football Club.

“Thanks to this new documentary series, viewers will be able to see what I see every day at this great club, and understand those amazing people more.”
