“Position of strength” - Keith Wyness makes Leicester City claim amid points deduction threat

Former football CEO Keith Wyness believes Leicester City are in a position of strength in terms of their charge for financial breaches following their promotion to the Premier League, speaking on Football Insider's Inside Track podcast.

The Foxes suffered a wobble during the latter stages of the 2023/24 campaign and after surrendering such a big lead at the top of the Championship table, it was possible that they would finish in the play-offs and not secure promotion back to the top flight at the first time of asking.

But they managed to pull themselves together just in time - and that allowed them to secure a top-two finish and the second-tier title.

However, rocky times could be ahead for the Foxes, with the club potentially needing to cash in on players this summer to give them the best chance of complying with financial rules in the future.

They offloaded plenty of players last summer, but more could be on the way to try and ensure that they don't receive further sanctions.

Keith Wyness on Leicester City points deduction threat

Having lost £89.7m during the 2022/23 campaign, any spending this summer will need to be controlled, but that could mean that their squad isn't fully up to standard for next season.

As well as this, they could receive a points deduction after being charged by the Premier League back in March.

In fact, a points deduction seems inevitable with Everton and Nottingham Forest both being docked points during the 2023/24 season for financial breaches.

But promotion could allow Leicester to appoint the finest lawyers to make their case - and this leaves them in a strong position - according to Wyness.

He said: "Leicester have got their lawsuits pending against the Premier League and EFL. I’m yet to understand the timing of those, and when they’re going to land.

"As I understand it, they could be starting next season with a points deduction straight away. Whether they will appeal that, I don’t know. There are too many loose ends at the moment to make any definitive statements or give any guidance on that.

"It is another messy situation created by a big grey area in the rules.

"For Leicester, at least they are promoted. I’d rather be in that situation than arguing the case in the Championship.

"They’re in a position of strength. They’ve got the Premier League riches in to help pay these wonderful lawyers we are becoming so well-acquainted with."

Leicester City will need to be smart in many areas to survive next season

Leicester will need to hire some top lawyers to give themselves the best chance of making the best case.

This could minimise the number of points they are docked after their charge.

They will also need to be sensible with money to give themselves the best chance of staying up, whilst also remaining within financial limits.

And on the pitch, Enzo Maresca may need to make adjustments to his playing style to maximise Leicester's chances of staying up for the long term.

Getting points on the board is more important than style.
