Over two years after his last official game, Ronaldinho looks to have permanently hung up his boots.

The Brazilian’s brother Assis, who has also acted as his agent, told O Globo that Ronaldinho “has stopped”.

The former Barcelona and Milan playmaker has been playing occasional unofficial friendlies and making public appearances since his contract with Fluminense was terminated in September 2015.

He said in December that he would finish playing in 2018 and his brother has now confirmed that we will never see Ronaldinho play a competitive match again.

Fortunately for the nostalgic among us, the 37-year-old will be conducting a global farewell tour, according to Assis.

“We’ll do something pretty big, nice — after the World Cup, probably in August,” Assis explained.

“We will do various events in Brazil, Europe and Asia. And, of course, we are combining a game with the Brazilian national team.”

Ronaldinho rose to stardom after making his professional debut for Grêmio in 1998. He moved to Europe in 2001, joining Paris Saint-Germain, and was a breakthrough sensation for Brazil in their 2002 World Cup triumph.

It was at Barcelona, whom Ronaldinho joined in 2003, that he rose to elite status and achieved his full potential. He won the Ballon d’Or in 2005 and earned recognition as one of the greatest players of his generation for his skill and creativity.

His never managed to replicate his Barcelona form with any consistency after leaving the club for Milan in 2008. Spells in Brazil and Mexico were followed by what can only be described as semi-retirement but Ronaldinho will be remembered much more for his world-beating performances for Barcelona and Brazil than for his later decline.

Countless people all over the world were inspired by his infectious smile, carefree approach and magical ability on the ball.

His boots may be hung but Ronadinho’s legacy plays on.
