Now, however, he looks to have really lost the plot.

Ronaldinho is reportedly considering going into politics in his native Brazil, which, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. O Globo say that the World Cup winner run for office in the state of Minas Gerais.

However, the political party that the former Barcelona playmaker is a controversial one, described by some as being on the far right.

The party is called Patriota and was formerly known as the National Ecologic Party.

Its presumed candidate for next year’s presidential election is a man called Jair Bolsonaro, a polemic character who has made hateful remarks about women, ethnic minorities and gay people. Renowned journalist Glenn Greenwald has called Bolsonaro: “The most misogynistic, hateful elected official in the democratic world”.

In other words, the free-spirited, smiling, friendly Ronaldinho that we all know and love is aligning himself with a far-right bigot. He met with Bolsonaro this week, posing for a photo opportunity with the politician and his new book.
