Manchester City have received a promising update surrounding the injury severity sustained by mainstay goalkeeper Ederson during their Premier League run-in.

The 30-year-old sustained a heavy blow to his shoulder during the first-half of Manchester City’s 0-2 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon, following a collision with City Ground centre-back Willy Boly.

While Ederson continued for the remainder of the first 45 minutes, a decision was taken to withdraw him from action and bring on the highly-rated back-up Stefan Ortega, with Erling Haaland going on to add to Josko Gvardiol’s first-half goal and seal all three points.

However, while the Brazilian international goalkeeper was spotted leaving Nottingham with his arm and shoulder secured by a sling, subsequent testing and scans on the injury have brought about some encouraging news for the club’s Premier League run-in.

That is according to the information of the Manchester Evening News’ Tyrone Marshall, who reports that Ederson is expected to return for Manchester City ‘before the end of the season’, after initial scans have revealed that the Brazilian’s injury is ‘not as bad as initially feared’.

On that basis, the report states that it is now hoped Ederson will be ‘fit enough to return before the end of the season’, with Manchester City still having four Premier League fixtures and an FA Cup final to play out this month.

Those wondering about Ederson’s chances of coming straight back into the Manchester City line-up for the visit of Wolves to the Etihad Stadium may have also been handed an indication over such possibilities too.

The MEN reports that there is ‘no desire to rush Ederson back’ with Stefan Ortega likely to continue in goal for the visit of Gary O’Neil’s side on Saturday evening, following on from his second-half outing against Nottingham Forest last Sunday.

Speaking to the media immediately after the contest at the weekend, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was initially unable to give an update on the severity of Ederson’s injury but said it “did not look good”.

After hosting Wolves at the Etihad Stadium this weekend, City face successive Premier League away trips to London as they take on Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur, before closing out their top-flight campaign at home to West Ham.

The season will ultimately come to a close in the FA Cup final however, with Manchester United the opponents for the second year running. Stefan Ortega has played every round of the competition this season, and would be expected to start regardless of Ederson’s fitness.
