Inter Milan were “too casual” in their surprise Serie A loss to Sassuolo, with wingback Denzel Dumfries emblematic.

Inter had avoided taking their foot off the gas following clinching the Serie A title in their victory over Torino last weekend.

The Nerazzurri beat a strong Granata side 2-0 as they prepared for their celebratory parade.

But yesterday against Sassuolo, the signs were there of a team who have perhaps lost some of their edge with nothing left to play for.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi made a few changes to the lineup.

The likes of Alexis Sanchez, Kristjan Asllani, and Davide Frattesi all got relatively rare starts.

But the manner in which Inter lost could hardly be blamed on the squad rotation, in truth.

Inter “Too Cassual” In Loss To Sassuolo – Dumfries Emblematic

In the first half of yesterday’s match, Inter lacked fluidity in a way that went beyond the changes to the lineup.

Stalwarts like Alessandro Bastoni and Lautaro Martinez also had several sloppy moments.

And in the view of the Corriere, no player embodied that lack of a real edge to Inter more than Dumfries.

The wingback had a number of forays forward. He put in a couple decent crosses, but largely was not able to really punish the Neroverdi defense.

Then, Dumfries was at fault for lax defending that allowed Sassuolo wingback Josh Doig to drive into the Nerazzurri penalty area and set up his team’s winning goal.

Moreover, Dumfries missed Inter’s best chance to equalize.

Juan Cuadrado replaced Dumfries. And the Colombian actually looked considerably sharper than Dumfries.

Cuadrado may have been a bit part player for Inter this season.

But there was an evident hunger on the former Juventus man’s part to make something happen.

That may well have been the key to Inter’s problems. The key starters that had delivered the Serie A title had gotten too casual.
