Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg is set to bring his 15-year association with the club to an end this summer - and he is already being lined up for a new job.

Achterberg is now expected to be reunited with former club captain Steven Gerrard as part of the set-up at Al-Ettifaq.

The Dutchman has reportedly been offered a deal to join the Saudi Pro League after the current season finishes.

Achterberg's departure from Liverpool marks the end of an era, coinciding with Klopp's impending exit as manager following the conclusion of the Premier League campaign.

Part of the set-up under five managers

The 52-year-old has been instrumental in shaping the club's goalkeeping legacy.

Achterberg commenced his coaching journey at Prenton Park after hanging up his gloves at Tranmere Rovers. He joined Liverpool's ranks in 2009 under Rafa Benitez's stewardship.

Over the years, he then ascended to a prominent role under four subsequent managers: Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish, Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp.

He has become a familiar face for many fans, often appearing front and centre on the bench during match days.

Achterberg was key to the recruitment of Alisson

Of course, the Brazilian has since gone on to become one of the world’s best and a cornerstone of the club’s success in recent years.

Leaving ‘with a heavy heart’

Reflecting on his tenure, Achterberg said he would be embarking on a new challenge with a mix of nostalgia and anticipation.

“I have decided with a heavy heart to leave LFC," he said.

"It has been an unbelievable and great journey for me and my family. I have loved each day working at this amazing club, but after a long think I feel it could be right for me to start a new challenge."

Special praise for Klopp

Achterberg reserved special praise for Klopp, hailing his transformative impact on the club.

"What joy he gives to all of us," he said. "He created world-class teams with his man-management skills, he brought us back to being believers, winners, and a force in European and world football."

As Achterberg prepares to embark on a fresh chapter, he’ll be joining another Reds legend in the shape of Gerrard and tackling a challenge of a completely different nature.
