Man United are set to answer the prayers of their fanbase and take an axe to their first team squad in the summer transfer window.

Reports claim that the Red Devils are planning a fire sale, with only three players safe from the chopping block: Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.

This should put their players on high alert, with many realising that their futures are possibly on the line in the final few games of the season.

We’ve picked out the players Man United would most likely consider selling this summer and given our verdict on whether or not they should be.

Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford‘s form has fallen off a cliff this season, going from 30 goals last term to just eight this year. His performances have been a far cry from this time a year ago.

The major barrier to selling the 26-year-old is the fact he’s locked into a long-term contract on big money. Is there a club out there willing to spend the cash necessary to get him out of Old Trafford.

With PSG reportedly cooling their interest in the wide forward, it seems very unlikely. Whether or not Man United fans like it he is here to stay, for the time being at least.

Bruno Fernandes

This is a difficult one as Bruno Fernandes is clearly Man United’s standout player, but he would also command the biggest transfer fee. The Portuguese is now 28-years-old and is no longer the future, so selling him could fund a rebuild. But replacing him is easier said than done.

Sometimes you just have to cut your losses. Man United vastly overpaid Ajax for the winger and got little in return. The Brazilian’s goal against Burnley at the weekend was just his fifth in the Premier League in two seasons.

On top of that, Antony‘s poor attitude and accusations of sexual assault make him not worth the hassle. If they could replace him with Michael Olise that would be a huge upgrade.

Jadon Sancho

Perhaps a new manager will want to reinvigorate Jadon Sancho as part of their plans at the club, but it does feel like his race is run.

The 24-year-old has performed well while on loan with Borussia Dortmund since January, and he could stay there permanently, but he will have to take a sizeable paycut to make it happen.

Harry Maguire

For years Man United fans have been screaming for Harry Maguire to be cast off, banished to some netherrealm never to be seen again. The defender was never worth the £75m they paid Leicester City for him, and never will be.

But the England international has come through a myriad of setbacks to show he has the grit and determination to be a Premier League centre-back, two attributes Man United are lacking across the squad.

Not to mention he is one of the few defenders who can manage to stay fit for an extended period of time, Maguire should at least see out his contract, which expires in 2025 but contains an option to extend it by a year.

Some notable clangers aside, Andre Onana has been one of Man United’s better performers this season. Although he has only kept eight clean sheets in the Premier League, the Cameroon international’s shot stopping has been at a high level. It’s worth sticking with him next season.

Man United thought they had solved their midfield woes with the £70m signing of Casemiro from Real Madrid. He enjoyed a strong first campaign, even if he did receive more red cards in one season than the entirety of his Real career.

The 32-year-old has many miles on the clock however, and it has showed this season. Finding a club to buy him would be no easy feat, but it’s worth trying.

Scott McTominay

No one would mistake Scott McTominay for a world-class player, but he is a useful, homegrown squad player who came through the club’s academy. A sale would be very handy when it comes to PSR, but his passion for the club is worth holding onto.

The door on Mason Greenwood’s future has not been fully shut, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe stating they would make a fresh decision on the striker after he bought a minority stake in the club.

Still, it’s for the best that they just move him on.

Another highly-rated player who failed to live up to expectations following a big money move, the writing is on the wall for Anthony Martial. Reports suggest he will be let go when his contract expires this summer, and that feels right. It’s time.

Martial’s compatriot Raphael Varane will also see his contract run out in June, unless Man United activate the option for a further year. It’s very possible they release him and go into the transfer market to find a replacement this summer.

Man United acquired Sofyan Amrabat last year on loan from Fiorentina with a view to making the move permanent at the end of the season. But the Moroccan’s performances have not justified extending his time at Old Trafford beyond then.
