Saturday could be a very decisive day in the 2023-24 La Liga season, with two major achievements possibly being achieved in Madrid and Catalonia respectively.

Real Madrid can secure the league title, one that has looked in the bag for several months. If they take care of business against Cadiz during the afternoon, it can become official in the evening, depending on the result of Catalan derby between Girona and Barcelona at Montilivi.

If Girona were to win or draw, then Real Madrid’s title victory would be mathematical. It would leave them 13 points clear (irrespective of whether Michel Sanchez’s side take one or three points) with only 12 left to play for.

If Girona can pick up the victory over Barcelona, it would see them leapfrog their local rivals into second place. But more significant than that, they would secure their place in next season’s Champions League, which would cap off an incredible campaign for the high-flying Catalonians.

With this in mind, it’s safe to say that both Real Madrid and Girona will be desperate for the latter to defeat Barcelona. It remains to be seen whether that will happen.
