West Ham announce David Moyes will leave the club this summer | OneFootball

David Moyes will leave West Ham United ‘by mutual consent’ when his contract expires this summer.

Moyes’ four-and-a-half-year reign was largely successful, but the club have decided to dispense with his services.

“David has been an absolute professional to work with, and he will leave with our greatest respect and good wishes,” chairman David Sullivan said (via West Ham’s official website).

“He deserves to be held in the highest esteem for the service he has given to West Ham United, and we wish him every success in the future.

“By making this announcement now, it allows David to get the send-off he deserves from the West Ham supporters and for us all to show our appreciation to him at our final home fixture of the season against Luton Town on Saturday.”

The 61-year-old secured two top-seven finishes in the Premier League and reached the Europa League semi-finals and quarter-finals.

He also delivered West Ham their first major trophy in 43 years with a Europa Conference League victory over Fiorentina last season. This European triumph was the club’s first continental success since 1965.

However, Moyes’ future has been under scrutiny in recent months, coinciding with the team’s poor form.

A string of disappointing results led to doubts about his future at the club. In their last match, the Hammers lost 5-0 to Chelsea.

It was not the first time the team had conceded five goals this year, suffering a 5-2 loss to Crystal Palace and a 6-0 mullering against Arsenal in February.

Fans have complained about his defensive style of play, but it would have been more tolerable if they hadn’t shipped 70 league goals this term.

The Scotsman also received a huge portion of the blame for their Europa League exit. They pointed to his insistence on a close-knit group as a reason why they lost steam in the second half of the season and ultimately lost to Bayer Leverkusen.

Moyes’ second term in charge is now over and West Ham fans can look to a new era. The Hammers have already secured a replacement – Julen Lopetegui.

The experienced Spanish manager has been out of work since leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers three days before the start of the season.

Lopetegui is expected to take the reins at the London Stadium this summer.
