The lighter side of football was on full show in Italy when it appeared yesterday that Manchester United had pulled off a clandestine move for Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie.

The former Leeds United player has impressed for the Old Lady, playing 35 times and creating 10 goals for his team mates.

He has formed the backbone of a three-man midfield for most of the season alongside players such as Adrien Rabiot, who himself came close to a move to United in the summer of 2022.

It has been an auspicious season for the American after a disappointing loan spell at Elland Road last term, where he made 20 appearances with just one assist as the Yorkshire side were relegated from the Premier League.

Such has been the form of McKennie in Turin, though, that he has been linked with yet another move and he has even been mentioned as a surprise option for Manchester United in the future.

In fact some reports have even suggested that his exit from Juventus is becoming increasingly likely in the summer.

As a result, a hacker took the opportunity to test how gullible some fans are and decided to spread some misinformation about the American’s future, knowing full well that news of a former Leeds man suiting up in red would likely spark some anger from Yorkshire.

According to Calciomercato.it, the hacker took over McKennie’s social media platforms and posted a picture of the midfielder in a Manchester United shirt with the caption “I’m here” written above.

The outlet claims that “fans went wild” when they saw the controversial news.

After the initial confusion of the hacker attack, Juventus reversed the situation by re-posting pictures of the player wearing Juventus’ famous black and white to placate worried fans and they insisted this was the work of a hacker and not McKennie.

However, with his contract expiring in 2025, perhaps the player’s near future will really be away from Juventus.

Valued at just £21 million by transfermarkt and being capable of playing across the midfield, at 24 McKennie could certainly represent excellent value for money on the transfer market.
