The reason for the absence of Phil Foden for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest has been revealed.

The 23-year-old has been directly involved in 34 goals in 48 appearances for Manchester City so far this season, and scored twice during Thursday’s 0-4 win over Brighton in the Premier League.

Manchester City’s victory at the AMEX Stadium allowed Pep Guardiola’s side to remain in control of their own destiny, with five victories from the Sky Blues’ remaining five Premier League matches able to secure a fourth successive league title.

Foden has started 43 matches for Manchester City already this season, and has propelled the Cityzens to a series of crucial wins, including recent hat-tricks against both Brentford and Aston Villa in the Premier League.

The versatile midfielder is also expected to play a major role in England’s European Championship campaign this summer, when Gareth Southgate’s squad travel to Germany for the tournament in June.

The Englishman has won 16 trophies with the Sky Blues to date, and will be hopeful of adding both another Premier League and Emirates FA Cup winners medal to his collection next month.

The 23-year-old will miss Manchester City’s pivotal trip to the City Ground on Sunday however, as the Sky Blues face Nottingham Forest looking to keep the pressure on Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Both Foden and Ruben Dias are absent from the matchday squad for the clash with Nottingham Forest, with Erling Haaland handing a boost to Guardiola by returning to first-team training following a two-match absence.

It has been revealed that Foden’s absence is due to illness, a major blow to City for Sunday’s visit to the Midlands, with centre-back Dias also missing as a result of the same problem.
